Coca-Cola's Santa
Through out the years Coca-Cola has redone its drink, re-branded its audience, and has had many catchy advertisements. One of its most famous advertisements has been the 1950s ads featuring one of the most famous men in the world, Santa Claus.
Santa is a famous icon that represents the holiday season. Using him as a spokesperson helped market Coca-Cola during the holidays. First, most people like to drink ice-cold beverages during the summer but Santa is a winter figure. We don’t need to buy coke especially in the winter most people would want to drink hot chocolate or tea but as the advertisement shows drinking a refreshing Coca-Cola is just as good during the winter as it is in the summer. This also has a religious side to it, Santa represents holidays but more specifically represents Christmas, which is a holiday for Christians. On Christmas families give each other gifts and the kids get gifts from Santa making Santa a person that kids love.
Over the holidays people come together to celebrate their religious beliefs. Since it is the holidays that bring people together and Santa being a major holiday icon, the advertisement makes the consumer feel that Coke should be part of the celebration too. Kids love Santa he is the one that brings them tons of presents once a year. When kids see Santa holding a Coca-Cola they want one and since parents want to please their children during the holiday season the kids will most likely get the coke. In the picture Santa is holding up a coke with a big smile on his face. He is holding the coke high up looking proud and happy to be drinking a Coke.
Coca-Cola defined what Santa looked like: a big jolly old man with a long white beard and big red coat. Using Santa this way unified representation of Santa across the globe. Santa is overweight and as most people know Coca-Cola isn’t the healthiest of drinks so showing him overweight and happy makes consumers think that being overweight is okay. Living in a society that consumes tons of fast food this makes sense. Obesity in America has been a problem for a long time and it was ads like these that helped contribute to it. Santa is also an older man with a white long beard, which makes him look wise. He’s an elder that a consumer should respect and listen to if he is drinking a Coca-Cola the consumer should too.
“My hat’s off to the pause that refreshes.” The advertisement quotes Santa saying that when he takes a break he drinks a Coca-Cola. Santa is the busiest man in the world he works around the clock so when he gets to “pause” he drinks a coke. Santa is like most of America, we are a nonstop society and compared to other countries we never take breaks. We are like Santa working around the clock day in and day out. It is almost plausible to say we live to work. Coke is trying to give us a break by drinking their drinks. This is interesting because coke is filled with caffeine to keep people going through out the day. This is an example of how our society has not changed our work ethic over the course of many years making this ad still relevant today.
